The fifth season of the critically acclaimed Western series Yellowstone has a new trailer out on Paramount Network. Kevin Costner plays John Dutton in this series, and he’s the patriarch of a strong family that’s fighting to preserve control of the biggest continuous cattle ranch in the United States. The new teaser begins with John taking the oath of office as Governor of Montana, promising to defend the state from any threat, be it external or internal. In Season 4, John ran for office as petty revenge against his foster son Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) political ambitions.
However, governing is quite different from ranch management, and John’s actions as governor will make the Dutton family an easier target. The preview reveals that the first thing John does as governor is to dismiss everyone who has worked there before. Then he promotes Beth (Kelly Reilly), his own daughter, to the position of Chief of Staff. John informs us in the trailer that he has a deep and abiding affection for the state of Montana, but that he would reign for his family at whatever cost.
Even John’s obstinacy may not be enough to stop this storm from developing. His decisions may have unintended consequences for his loved ones. Yellowstone, written by Taylor Sheridan, has been consistently successful at the box office for Paramount. So it’s no surprise that Paramount asked Sheridan to create three spinoff shows. 1883, starring Sam Elliot, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw, was the first Yellowstone spinoff and was released by Paramount+ last year. In this sequence of flashbacks, we see the ancestors of the Dutton family—the ones who settled the West and built the ranch that plays a role in the events of modern-day Yellowstone—establishing themselves there.
Following another generation of the Dutton family, 1923 stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, two of Hollywood’s all-time greats. In addition to Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, Wendy Moniz, Jen Landon, and Kathryn Kelly, the cast of Yellowstone also features Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, Jefferson White, Forrie Smith, Denim Richards, Ian Bohen, Finn Little, Ryan Bingham, and Denim Richards. In addition to Jacki Weaver, Kylie Rogers, and Kyle Red Silverstein, Josh Lucas will reprise his role as a young John Dutton in Season 5.
Finally, the incredible cast is completed with the additions of Kai Caster, Lainey Wilson, Lilli Kay, and Dawn Olivieri. On November 13th, Paramount Network will show the first two episodes of Yellowstone Season 5. Episodes will thereafter drop every Sunday for the foreseeable future. Fans who want to catch up on the Duttons’ earlier escapades may do so by tuning in to a full series marathon during Labor Day weekend, September 2–5.
