There have been many great empires throughout history, both old and new. These empires were so powerful that they were able to provide their citizens with greater freedoms and comforts than those of the people they defeated. Perhaps the Roman Empire had the greatest impact on modern society. The first season of Barbarians depicted the cruelty of the Roman soldiers and the subsequent uprising of the Germanic tribes of Germania Magna, dubbed barbarians by the Romans. The story revolves around Arminius (Laurence Rupp), a former barbarian in Rome’s employ who rose to fame by ambushing three Roman armies at the legendary Battle of Teutoburg Forest.
Now, fresh troops are on their way. There will soon be a Rome. Arminius rose to power after the decisive victory in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, which resulted in the suicide of Publius Quinctilius Varus (Gaetano Aronica). A year of “calm and healing” for Thusnelda (Jeanne Goursaud) and the Germanic people is seen at the beginning of the trailer. Yet Thusnelda is well aware that the Romans will return if they are insulted, and she thus issues a warning that they will. And they did really come back.
A year after their initial loss, the Romans were under the command of Flavus (Daniel Donskoy), Arminius’ brother who still serves Rome, & the Roman commander Germanicus. Arminius, too, is aware of the danger, and he is straining to gather the troops necessary to withstand the impending imperial invasion. This looks to be a council meeting, when Thusnelda speaks up, saying, “Marbod, he has 70,000 troops.” Maroboduus, king of the Marcomanni people, with whom Arminius plans to establish an alliance to attack the Romans, will be portrayed by Murathan Muslu.
The preview reveals that Thusnelda does not have complete faith in Marbod, but it appears that Arminius has little option but to do so. Arminius appears to be betrayed by the Romans by this monarch, but he ultimately prevails. Both Arminius and Flavus, his brother, would get into an argument with each other. How Segestes (Bernhard Schütz), Thusnelda’s pro-Roman father, and his relationship with Folkwin Wolfspeer (David Schutter), Thusnelda’s spurned lover and Arminius’s best friend, develops remains to be seen. The video warns that a traitorous man is likely to be found in close proximity to the centre of power, adding that “Treason has no sympathisers.”
This is ultimately a fight for the right to decide for oneself. Fight for liberty, and underdogs with a little gut will stand up to any authority trying to control them, as they have for millennia. They are committed to each other in conflict and during peace. Andreas Heckmann, Arne Nolting, and Jan Martin Scharf developed Barbarians. The second season also features Robert Maaser, Andrea Garofalo, Stefan Ruzowitzky, Katharina Heyer, Alessandro Fella, Cynthia Micas, Gabriele Rizzoli, and Giovanni Carta. On October 21, Barbarians will be available once more on Netflix.
