The Beverly Hills Cop sequel starring Eddie Murphy and Axel Foley has begun filming, but the cast is still growing. In addition to reuniting Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot for the film, the highly anticipated Netflix project has also recruited Kevin Bacon to act with Murphy. He joins the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige in the ever-expanding list of stars. Murphy will reprise his role as Axel Foley in the upcoming fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop film series, while plot specifics are still being kept under wraps.
The first episode of the original 1984 series followed the out-of-place police officer as he travelled to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of a friend. It was so successful that Murphy was able to land two further roles as Foley (1987 and 1994) and catapult his career to new heights. However, Murphy has not reprised the character in theatres since the third film’s unfavourable reaction. Foley returns in a film directed by Mark Molloy, whose directorial debut he is, based on a scenario by Will Beall (Aquaman, Zack Snyder’s Justice League).
Murphy, together with Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films, will produce the film as well as star in it as the lead role. Charisse Hewitt-Webster and Ray Angelic serve as executive producers, with Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Melissa Reid serving as co-producer. Even though they are both iconic figures from the 1980s, this will be the first time Murphy and Bacon have ever appeared in a film together. Of course, Bacon also became a household name that same year as Murphy, courtesy of his role in the groundbreaking movie Footloose.
That led to a famous career, including parts in films like Tremors, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and Mystic River. The actor is known for his roles as Jackie Rohr on City on a Hill and his horrifying turn as a camp counsellor in They/Them. The Toxic Avenger and Leave the World Behind, the latter of which will also star Ethan Hawke and Julia Roberts, are two more major projects in the future for him. In the very early stages of filming, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is a sequel to the first film.
