We may have gone a long way in terms of the prequel series’ history, and next Sunday will see the airing of the seventh and final part of House of the Dragon, but after only six episodes, it would be a stretch to argue that we have a firm grasp on our favourite new characters. An HBO behind-the-scenes movie released this week in honour of the cast and crew of “Game of Thrones” returning to Spain for more filming appears to be supporting evidence.
In a sequence that was cut from the show, Prince Daemon Targaryen’s (Matt Smith) bisexuality is briefly explored. Out of Context House of the Dragon, a fan account on Twitter was the first to bring attention to this information by speculating that Daemon was involved with a guy in these two stills. In one, the prince meets the eyes of a servant, while in another, he leans in for a whisper.
After that, the deleted scene backs it up: Daemon and the servant are seen kissing in the background of a scene when one of his kids goes toward him. The novel that inspired House of the Dragon, George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, never specifies Daemon Targaryen’s sexuality. The series has demonstrated, however, that the Targaryen prince has no boundaries when it comes to his sexual appetites.
Daemon accompanied his niece Rhaenyra (originally portrayed by Milly Alcock) to a brothel in one of the most talked about episodes of Season 1. There is still time to celebrate Daemon’s bisexuality before it becomes canon since there are plenty of episodes (and at least one more season) left to explore the character’s various dimensions. Nonetheless, given the likely expansion of Daemon’s involvement in House of the Dragon, it’s likely that we’ll see Sunday night screen confirmation of his sexuality.
Set around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is a standalone fantasy novel. House Targaryen, who governed Westeros for many years from the Iron Throne before being deposed by House Baratheon, is the primary focus of the series. House of the Dragon, in contrast to the main series, is more action-packed, with the first season covering the lives of at least two generations of characters. Even though one of the showrunners has left, Season 2 will still air.
New episodes of House of the Dragon air on Sunday nights on HBO.
