There appears to be a new scream queen on the Hollywood scene. According to Deadline, Samara Weaving, who starred in Ready Or Not, is tied to another horror project: an action-horror film titled Azrael, which is apparently being considered by producers as the beginning of a new horror franchise. Weaving has been in several horror films and TV shows. The action horror flick Ready Or Not, in which she appeared, catapulted her to fame. She also played a recurring part on STARZ’s Ash vs. Evil Dead and appeared in Netflix’s horror comedy The Babysitter and its sequel.
Next year, Weaving will join a legendary horror franchise as the hero of Scream 6. Weaving’s filmography includes hits like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Bill & Ted Face the Music, and The Valet, proving that he’s more than just a horror actor. Hollywood on Netflix and Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu both include her as a main cast member. The next films to include Weaving are the forthcoming thriller Boarderline and the upcoming fantasy film Babylon, both directed by Damien Chazelle. Not only is the plot of Azrael being kept under wraps, but so is Weaving’s participation in the movie.
Not only is she the first cast member revealed, but she is also the first to actually appear in the film. We do know that Evan Katz will be at the helm, and that Simon Barrett wrote the narrative for this action/horror flick. Katz has directed episodes for other acclaimed horror shows before, including The Haunting of Bly Manor, Swamp Thing, Scream: The TV Series, and Channel Zero.
Both the criminal comedy Cheap Thrills and the suspenseful thriller Small Crimes feature his acting abilities. Barrett is an experienced horror writer, having contributed to films such as V/H/S, the 2016 remake of Blair Witch, and You’re Next. Additionally, he penned 2024’s Godzilla vs. Kong, a film that will include neither monster. Reports indicate that Jason Cloth and Dave Caplan of C2 Motion Picture Group bought Azrael in a “competitive situation,” with the intention of producing and financing the film. In addition to Cloth and Katrin Kissa, the film’s other executive producers, Dan Kagan and Barrett, will also be producers.
Azrael will reportedly begin shooting in Estonia this coming October.
