The demand for actors to appear in superhero films keeps growing along with the genre’s popularity. Several A-list actors have recently dabbled in the genre, including Christian Bale as Gorr in Thor: Love and Thunder, Charlize Theron as the Multiverse of Madness at the end of Doctor Strange, and Robert Pattinson, who continued to act in independent films after his breakout role in Twilight, as Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. There are, however, actors like John Boyega who want to make their own films rather than join a series.
People magazine recently asked Irish actor Paul Mescal if he would like to join the Marvel or DC franchises, and Mescal said that he would rather join the Top Gun series, which stars Tom Cruise, than either one. Mescal made his debut in the feature film industry in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut The Lost Daughter. He co-starred with Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, and Ed Harris. He has lately been seen in the critically acclaimed festival films Aftersun and God’s Creatures, a psychological drama.
Normal People, a romantic psychological drama on the BBC, made him a household name for his portrayal of Connell Waldron, a gifted student and athlete who battles with his own personal demons. His work on the show garnered him a British Academy Television Award, as well as nominations for the Primetime Emmy and the Critics’ Choice Television Awards. When asked about his career, he replied, “If I get to keep creating independent films for the rest of my life, I’ll be a happy man.” When pressed further, he said, “Something like Top Gun: Maverick would be more exciting to me,” adding, “I adore that movie.” Top Gun: Maverick, the largest summer movie of the year, has been very well received by audiences. After 30 years, Cruise returned to his fan-favourite role Pete “Maverick” Mitchell to teach a fresh group of aspiring pilots in the film.
Its success may be attributed to the fact that it appealed to moviegoers of all ages and generations. A few weeks after its initial release, the picture had already become Cruise’s highest-grossing film, the highest-grossing film of 2022, and the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing even Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. It’s possible that Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie will work together again in the future on another Maverick film, despite the fact that no sequel has been announced or even casually considered by the film’s creators. As for Mescal, we hope he appears in it because we’ve enjoyed his work in films like “Strangers,” “Lionel,” “The History of Sound,” and many more.
