In the One Piece Chapter 1061, Dr Vegapunk made an unexpected appearance to meet the straw hats, as had been hinted at in teasers.
Raw Scans and Detailed Synopsis of One Piece Chapter 1061
Germa 66’s journey is continued on the cover, as the Vinsmoke sibling is now on the run with Ceaser. Egghead — Island of the Future is the name of this section. The Straw Hats continue to have trouble on the water, and Luffy saves Chopper from being swept away by the storm, then snatches Jewelry Bonney as she surfaces. However, as the straw hats listen to Bonney’s concerns, they glance below and spot a massive shark. The shark makes an attempt on thousand sunny’s life, but the ship escapes its jaws. Zoro is astounded by the size of the shark and questions whether or not it is indeed a shark given that it appears to be constructed entirely of metal.
Jinbei, concerned for Luffy and Chopper after they lost control of the ship and jumped into the water, sends Franky to their aid. Franky, meantime, starts up the Ship’s motor in an effort to outrun the shark. The shark, however, has a cannon in its mouth, which it uses to fire at the Thousand Sunny, causing the ship and all the straw hats aboard it to sink. The strong current makes it impossible for Straw Hats to swim on the ocean’s surface, but a robot materialises underneath the waves to foil the shark’s meal plans. Meanwhile, Jinbei escapes the Shark’s cannon and leads Luffy, Chopper, and Bonney to a neighbouring island.
Close-by Island with a Navy Base
Tashigi is supervising the kids from Punk Hazard over on the neighbouring Island of the straw hats. Doll, a vice admiral, approaches Tashigi and informs her that Helmeppo is concerned about Koby and begs her to intervene. On the other hand, Helmeppo and Hibari, both Navy Commanders on the “Sword” squad, appeal to Rear Admiral “Prince Grus” for assistance in retrieving Koby from the Blackbeard. Helmeppo suggests they rescue Koby by borrowing Seraphim from nearby “Egghead” Island. When asked about Koby’s rescue, the rear admiral said they couldn’t help at the moment.
It’s Egghead Island and the one and only Dr Vegapunk!
Two years ago, on Sabaody Island, Luffy, Chopper, Jinbei, and Bonney met for the first time, and now they’re back together on this adjacent island talking about how they’re both from the worst generation. Bonney expresses gratitude for their rescue but insists that they remain adversaries, adding that she refuses to accept his claim to imperial status. Jinbei inquires as to the whereabouts of Bonney’s crew and ship, and Bonney explains that she arrived alone and that the Shark devoured her vessel. They are hungry, so Luffy and Chopper suggest going out to eat. Because this is a government facility, Bonney informs her that they will not be able to locate any food.
The island, she explains, is called Egghead, and it is set five hundred years in the future; more significantly, it is home to Dr Vegapunk’s laboratory, and Bonney is in attendance on behalf of the good doctor. In the meantime, the Straw hats are being rescued from drowning in the ocean by a big robot that pulls the Thousand Sunny out of the water. Franky expresses gratitude to the massive robot for saving them and demands to know who is in control of it. A young woman emerges from the robot, muttering something about the shark’s failure. She continues by saying she did not aid the pirates and that she is a government employee who goes by the moniker “Dr Vegapunk.”
