According to Deadline, James Cameron’s Avatar has made $3.5 million from 37 markets since its re-release in cinemas, indicating strong early performance abroad. In its opening weekend in Italy, the picture grossed $300,000. A further $200,000 in German revenue was recorded as of Thursday, and another $200,000 in Mexican revenue. The film earned $400,000 on its opening weekend in Australia, placing third, with 69% of it coming from sales of 3D tickets. On its second day in French theatres, the picture has already made $700,000, showing that it is performing well there.
Within its first two days in theatres in Saudi Arabia, Avatar earned $300,000. In Korea, the picture earned an extra $446,000. Pre-sales of Avatar have brought in $2.5 million ahead of the film’s North American debut. Several countries including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Croatia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Bosnia, Singapore, and Thailand all had the film debut at number one. Deadline, however, did not give any hard figures. So far, the movie’s results at the worldwide box office point to a promising beginning for the theatrical re-issue of the blockbuster.
At the conclusion of the weekend, a clearer picture of the film’s financial performance will emerge. When first released in 2009, Avatar was an instant critical and financial triumph, quickly becoming the highest-grossing picture of all time and the first to cross $2 billion at the global box office. The film’s innovative 3D technology and striking graphics garnered a lot of praise. It has been reported by Deadline that a special sneak look of Avatar: The Way of Water would be included in the film’s end credits for fans who attend the theatrical re-release of the smash 2009 picture. On December 16th, the film will debut in theatres nationwide.
