There has been a growing pattern in recent years of bringing popular video game franchises to the little and large screens of television. Sony and Playstation, who have previously worked on similar adaptations, are currently developing the exciting Gran Turismo. Recent casting announcements signal a coming assemblage of the film’s components. The Hollywood Reporter states that Archie Madekwe, star of See, has been cast as David Harbour’s co-star. Madekwe is a newcomer with an impressive list of movie credits. The 2019 Ari Aster film Midsommar, starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, and Vilhelm Blomgren about a couple whose relaxing vacation is interrupted by a mysterious pagan cult, included the actor in an earlier role.
Madekwe also featured in Voyagers with Lily-Rose Depp, Colin Farell, and Tye Sheridan. But he really broke out with his co-starring role with Jason Momoa in the dystopian series See on Apple TV+. Madekwe takes on the character of Kofun, one of two conjoined twins on a planet where the general population is blind. The latest season of the show has just premiered, and it will be the last. The actor’s next project is Saltburn, directed by Emerald Fennell, in which he co-stars with Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, and Richard E. Grant. Sony’s latest adaption, Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, was a financial success, and with the announcement of a Gran Turismo film in May 2022, the company hopes to repeat that feat.
It was one of the most successful movie adaptations of a video game, earning over $400 million worldwide. Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9, is a huge fan of the Gran Turismo series and will be directing the future racing film. Although the specifics of the tale are being kept under wraps, the future adaptation will be based on the actual experience of a teenager who played the racing simulation game. The documentary will follow a young gamer who dominates in online racing tournaments and goes on to become a real-life professional race car driver.
To play the character of the young gamer, Madekwe will be joined by Harbour, who will play the role of the retired driver who teaches him the ropes. Next Monday, production on Gran Turismo will go up in Europe. Jason Hall and Zach Baylin wrote the screenplay for the movie. PS4’s Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, together with PlayStation’s Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti, served as producers. Hall and the game’s designer, Kazunori Yamauchi, will be the film’s executive producers. The anticipated Gran Turismo launch date is August 11, 2023.
