A conclusion appears to be in sight for The Handmaid’s Tale. The sixth and final season of the dystopian series was confirmed prior to the fifth season’s debut. The critically acclaimed series debuted in 2017 and is based on a novel by Margaret Atwood from 1985. Next week, on September 14, Hulu will debut Season 5 of the show. In The Handmaid’s Tale, the dystopian society of Gilead has taken over a country that is growing more and more divided. In the future of this show, women’s rights have been eliminated due to falling childbearing rates. June, or Offred as she’s known throughout the series, is a woman whose life was upended by the establishment of Gilead.
June was once a happy wife and mother, but now she is a servile handmaid for a wealthy family that needs her to have children for them or they would lose their fortune. After killing Commander Waterford, June will have to deal with the fallout in season five. She’ll have a hard time rethinking who she is and what she’s here for. In the meanwhile, as Gilead’s political power spreads beyond the Canadian border, the recently widowed Serena will try to boost her reputation in Toronto. With Hannah still missing, June, Luke, and Moira will continue their attempt to find her by fighting Gilead from a distance. It has been a genuine pleasure to convey the narrative of Margaret Atwood’s original novel and chillingly contemporary world, and we are happy to deliver audiences a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale,” said Bruce Miller, the show’s creator, showrunner, and executive producer. “We are thankful to Hulu and MGM for enabling us to tell this tale, which regrettably has stayed as relevant as ever throughout its run,” he stated, “and we are in awe of our great fans for their unrelenting support, and without whom we would never have reached to this stage.”
Miller is now producing a series based on Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments, so this is not the final chapter in the story of Gilead. In addition to Elisabeth Moss, Bradley Whitford, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, O-T Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, and Sam Jaeger feature in the upcoming fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale. Because Seasons 5 and 6 are still to come, fans shouldn’t go into mourning just yet. The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 premieres on Hulu on September 14.
