Catherine Keener has reportedly joined the cast of Joker: Folie à Deux in an unspecified role. In the musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Joker, Keener has reportedly been cast as a prominent cast member, though her character has yet to be revealed. Keener’s most recent film appearance was in The Adam Project, a Netflix science fiction film also starring Mark Ruffalo and Ryan Reynolds. Recently, she appeared in the eerie Netflix horror series Brand New Cherry Flavor.
Joker: Folie à Deux is said to take place in Arkham Asylum, the famous Gotham City institution for the criminally insane where all the major Batman villains are sent after being apprehended by the World’s Greatest Detective, so Keener has plenty of experience with both blockbuster and production filled with weird elements. Joker doesn’t have Batman, but it does end with a scene at Arkham Asylum, where Joker/Arthur Fletcher (Joaquin Phoenix) is transferred after he incites a revolt in Gotham City and kills people on live TV. Lady Gaga will also appear in the film as Harleen Quinzel, the psychiatrist who gets bewitched by the Joker and goes on to become a supervillain in her own right.
The sequel Joker: Folie à Deux will expand Phillips’ section of the Batman canon, raising the possibility that other iconic bad guys may make appearances. In that instance, Keener may play one of Batman’s villains. Not only does Keener join the sequel in a new role, but there are also a number of other new cast members. Brendan Gleeson has recently been added to Joker: Folie à Deux in an undisclosed role. Zazie Beetz is in discussions to return as Arthur’s neighbour Sophie, with whom he has an illusory connection. The only thing we know about the plot of the sequel is that it will have intricate musical performances.
After Taxi Driver’s faithfulness in his debut picture, Phillips took an unexpected turn by depicting a brutal and realistic Gotham City where a lack of access to public health may breed actual monsters. On the contrary, a musical based on the Batman canon has piqued our interest, and we can’t wait to check out Joker: Folie à Deux. The sequel won’t begin filming until December, so we won’t know anything new until then. The Joker may be seen right now on HBO Max. Release date October 4 for Joker: Folie à Deux.
