Shortcomings is a brand new comedy film brought to you by the creative minds of Topic Studios and Tango Entertainment. The movie’s completion and initial cast members were disclosed by the studios lately. Leading roles will be played by Justin H. Min (The Umbrella Academy), Sherry Cola (Good Trouble), and Ally Maki (Hacks). Along with Debby Ryan and Tavi Gevinson, the cast also includes Timothy Simons, Jacob Batalon, and Sonoya Mizuno.
Shortcomings are the first feature film that Randall Park, who has directed and written for television before, has helmed.
But Park is most widely recognised for his dramatic roles in several critically acclaimed productions. He became well-known to many people because of the critically acclaimed comedy series Fresh Off the Boat, which aired for six seasons from 2015 to 2020. Recently, Park provided his voice for Human Resources, a spin-off of Big Mouth, as Pete the Logic Rock. Later this year, he will appear in the Netflix office comedy Blockbuster. Ben (Min), “a cynical Bay Area movie theatre manager,” and Miko (Maki) are the protagonists of Shortcomings. Their relationship is deteriorating. Ben and his closest friend Alice (Cola) work through his fading relationship, investigate Alice’s dating practices, and overcome any other obstacles to their progress as individuals. In reviews, the film has been praised for its “hilariously irreverent study of racial politics, sexual mores, and pop culture.”
The screenplay for Shortcomings was adapted by Adrian Tomine, who also acts as an executive producer, & is based on his graphic novel of the same name. Margot Hand produces for Picture Films, while Park, Hieu Ho, and Michael Golamco produce for Imminent Collision. Among the many people involved in the production process are Topic Studios’ Ryan Heller, Michael Bloom, Jennifer Semler, and Maria Zuckerman; Tango Entertainment’s Tim Headington, Lia Buman, Max Silva, and Neil Shah; and Roadside Attractions’ Ryan Paine, Howard Cohen, Eric d’Arbeloff, and Jennifer Berman. Topic Studios and Tango Entertainment have both worked on genre-bending projects prior to this picture.
Notable recent projects that Topic has worked on as a producer include the forthcoming horror/thriller Nanny and the Kristen Stewart-led biography Spencer. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and Spaceman are two of Tango’s current works in progress. Park remarked of the film’s ensemble, “It was a pleasure to see such gifted actors bring these flawed characters to life. I’m really honoured to be the director of a film that will shed light on the fact that Asian Americans like a wide variety of diner sandwiches.”
As of now, there is no official set date for the Release of Shortcomings.
