There seems to be no end in sight to the lawlessness of the wild west. According to Deadline, four more names have been added to the cast of Kevin Costner’s western epic Horizon, which already included Michael Rooker of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Alongside him in the film are Jena Malone, Alejandro Edda, & Tatanka Means. In addition to Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, Jamie Campbell Bower, and most recently Thomas Haden Church, the four will also be included in the film. Horizon, a pet project of Costner’s, spans the fifteen years before and after the Civil War as the United States expanded westward, and it depicts the struggles that people of all walks of life encountered on their way to the new frontier.
Various characters’ views will be used to explore the settlers’ experiences with the locals and the treacherous environment they encountered. It also delves into the motivations and harsh realities of the pioneers who came west in pursuit of a better life. Rooker has maintained his status as a significant celebrity for many years, most recently receiving acclaim for his portrayal of Yondu Udonta in the MCU. In fact, he initially gained widespread recognition as Merle Dixon on The Walking Dead, and before that, he had a significant career in television and movies that includes his first and one of his greatest leading performances in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
Rooker is a personal favourite and close friend of filmmaker James Gunn. He was in Gunn’s debut picture, Slither, and also participated in Gunn’s smash hit, The Suicide Squad. Some of his most recent and upcoming film roles are The Outlaws and Fast X, with F9: The Fast Saga, The Dark Tower, Love and Monsters, and Fairfax among his others. Both Rooker and Costner have worked together before; they were both in the Oscar-winning film JFK. And with Costner in Rooker, the movie has a second major star who can easily steal the show whenever he appears onscreen.
It also marks the star’s comeback to the western genre; in 1993, they participated in the classic film Tombstone. Malone has acted in a number of films, including The Hunger Games, Neon Demon, and Zach Snyder’s Sucker Punch, but she has lately made the transition to television with her role in Amazon’s Goliath. Since she previously collaborated with Costner in Hatfields & McCoys, she is looking forward to working with Snyder again in Rebel Moon.
Edda, meantime, is most recognised for his role as El Chapo in the Netflix original series Narcos: Mexico, though you may recognise him from his recent roles in American Made and The Forever Purge. In the gaming world, he also makes an appearance in The Last of Us Part II. Means, who has just been seen in Reservation Dogs, rounds out the cast with an upcoming major appearance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. He has also worked with Pierce Brosnan before, in the AMC series The Son. Costner produces Horizon via his Territory Pictures label, and he and Jon Baird co-wrote the script. The film’s official release date has not yet been announced.
