The teaser for Florian Zeller’s new film, The Son, starring Hugh Jackman, has been published, and it teases a family drama at the film’s core. Zeller’s last film, The Father, received widespread acclaim. A message from Jackman himself, in which he expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to unveil the teaser, was posted on Twitter before the film’s official release. The actor’s abilities as an actor are on display in the teaser, which follows Peter as he deals with his estranged son Nicholas’ (Zen McGrath) stay with him after being left off by his mother Kate (Laura Dern).
The teaser also features Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hawkins, who is reuniting with the film’s director, and who looks to be at odds with Peter for some reason. While at first glance Nicholas’ stay doesn’t seem that horrible, the teaser teases a dispute between Nicholas and Beth, Peter’s current partner, portrayed by Vanessa Kirby, so tensions are bound to rise. Dern’s acting chops are also on full show, as she successfully conveys the sense of loss that her character feels throughout the film. This trailer does a good job of setting up the central tension between Peter and his son Nicholas.
Peter’s statement that “everything is OK at home” serves as a striking contrast to his earlier outburst of rage, illustrating this point. Some potentially upbeat flashback moments are also hinted at in the teaser, which might provide a sharp contrast to the dire circumstances the protagonists find themselves in at the present. Zeller helms and co-wrote The Son with Christopher Hampton. Zeller has directed before, with the critically acclaimed The Father earning several honours including a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Hopkins also starred in the picture, and he was recognised with an Oscar for his performance.
The Son, the upcoming picture from the lauded director that promises a family drama at its core, has the potential to be an emotionally taxing experience for moviegoers. On September 7, 2018, The Son will have its world debut at the 74th Annual Venice International Film Festival. Thereafter, on November 11, the film will have a limited theatrical release before spreading to other cinemas.
Synopsis
In THE SON, a drama about a family trying to get back together after years apart, Peter (Jackman) and his new girlfriend Emma (Kirby) are thrown for a loop when Peter’s ex-wife Kate (Dern) and their now-adolescent son Nicholas (McGrath) show up. The young guy is disturbed, aloof, and furious; he hasn’t been seen at school for months. Peter aspires to provide for Nicholas the way he would have hoped for from his own father. With a new baby, a demanding job, and a dream job offer in Washington, he can’t seem to keep his focus on being a present father to Nicholas.
