So far, 2022 has been an excellent year for the horror genre. There have been some excellent reboots of established horror series, and a few really terrifying original films. The A24 slasher film X, directed by Ti West, topped that list. A prequel to the film, titled Pearl, will be released next month, much to the joy of horror aficionados everywhere. A new clip from this X-traordinary origin tale has been published, and fans are going to freak out over it. Mia Goth reprises her role as Pearl in this new clip, which finds her dancing her way through an audition. Apparently, she’s having a great time on her way to stardom. A flashback of Pearl’s slow dance after killing RJ in X is intercut with the present scenario.
One of the most unsettling deaths in X took place in that bloody scene. This additional clip shows how Pearl’s post-event dance brought even more eerie depth to her tragic persona.
In March of this year, X was released, and it immediately became one of the most original and thought-provoking slashers of all time. Despite the fact that the trailers emphasised the adult film and Texas Chainsaw scenes more than anything else, Despite the obvious Saw parallels, the film itself was much more than that. A compelling look at the cultural influences behind the production and consumption of horror and adult entertainment.
And yet, it was a gloomy story about the sadness of old age and the resentment of youth for its inability to appreciate what it has. X was driven by its faulty envy, which also contributed to the film’s original take on the horrors it depicted. Goth’s outstanding performance was crucial to the overall success of X. Her performance as Pearl and Maxine were chillingly intense. Some have even said that Goth’s performance in X deserves an Oscar.
Pearl’s spiral into madness on screen was stunning and joyfully perverse, but the similarities between her and Maxine were nightmare fuel, which is why the news that West produced a hidden prequel about Pearl was so intriguing and fascinating. From what we can see from the teaser, Pearl will completely embrace the lunacy that made X such a legendary figure. The year 1918 setting and the film’s bright colour scheme set it apart from being a mere rehash of X. It will be entertaining to watch Pearl as she goes to ridiculous lengths to achieve her goal of being famous. On September 16, Pearl will make her triumphant return to cinemas once more.
