Sydney Sweeney, the breakthrough star of Euphoria, has already signed up for her next major role. A rumour from Deadline claims that Sweeney will play the lead role in the film version of the forthcoming novel The Registration. Madison Lawson’s first novel will hit shelves on September 27. The rights were purchased by Sony Pictures. Sweeney’s performance as Cassie on Euphoria has elevated her to fan favourite status since the show’s 2019 premiere. Sweeney was nominated for an Emmy as Supporting Actress in a Drama Series after the conclusion of the show’s second season.
She was also nominated for an acting award for her performance in the anthology series The White Lotus. Sweeney is a newcomer to the Emmy nominations this year, despite having appeared in series like The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 in the past. The Registration isn’t her only future project; she also has Madame Web, National Anthem, and Reality Winner in the works. The dystopian thriller The Registration takes place in a world where it is possible to Register for the privilege of committing a single murder without facing consequences. Our heroine Lynell Mize decides to take action and put a potentially dangerous ex-boyfriend on record.
But Lynell discovers, to her utter shock, that someone else has Registered her, too. Lynell knows she only has two weeks left to live, so she decides to find out who the mysterious stranger is who wants her dead, and why. In addition to acting in the picture, Sweeney will also serve as producer under the Fifty-Fifty Films name, with Fuller Media Brand’s Brad Fuller (A Quiet Place, The Purge). Ben Collins and Luke Piortrowski, a writing team, will adapt the screenplay for the big screen. Other forthcoming projects from the duo include Hellraiser, The Sisters of Samhain, and the adaptation of the novel A Head Full of Ghosts.
The official book synopsis, according to Lawson’s website, reads: “Avoiding Registration is impossible. Imagine it’s legal to commit one murder in your lifetime. If the murder is reported and carried out within fourteen days, the reward will be doubled. Lynell Mize is surprised when a stranger Registers her to be killed while she waits in line to Register the guy who raped her as a kid. No one who doesn’t know her would waste his one opportunity to kill legally on her. She has to know who is out to get her dead within the next two weeks. To what end, if you please? A lot easier said than done, as Lynell quickly finds out when she realises that several total strangers have used their Registration on her. Along the way, Lynell runs across her former spouse, who is hellbent on unearthing a part of her history that she would rather stay buried. Lynell knows she only has a matter of days to live, but that won’t stop her from trying to find out the truth and avoid a fate she didn’t choose.”
There is no estimated release date for The Registration at this time.
