Sugar, an ambitious new comedy for Apple TV+, has added some heavy hitters to its roster, including Anna Gunn, James Cromwell, Dennis Boutsikaris, Alex Hernandez, and Lindsey Pulsipher. The Hollywood Reporter states that the five actors will join the already announced Amy Ryan and Kirby-Howell Baptiste in the roster with the show’s lead, Colin Farrell. Sugar is a “genre-bending” series, according to Apple TV+, although the show’s story details are still mostly a secret.
According to THR, the programme will update the traditional detective genre. Mark Protosevich conceived and will serve as an executive producer on the project. The writer has collaborated on the scripts for several successful Hollywood features, such as I Am Legend, Poseidon, Oldboy, and Thor. In addition to his role as an executive producer, Fernando Meirelles will direct each episode of the series. Meirelles, a Brazilian filmmaker nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his work on the crime thriller City of God, is widely recognised as one of the greatest in the industry.
The Two Popes, for which he was nominated for an Oscar, was also directed by him. Farrell, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, Scott Greenberg, and Chip Vucelich are also producers of the film. Apple TV+ has not released any information on the five new cast members. This is likely because of the clandestine nature of Sugar. While both Gunn and Boutsikaris have been in AMC’s Breaking Bad world, this series will be their return to crime dramas, which should be exciting for fans.
While Boutsikaris played lawyer Rich Schweikart in the Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul, Gunn played Walter White’s wife, Skyler, on AMC’s crime-drama blockbuster Breaking Bad. Among his many cinematic appearances, probably the most well-known are those in Babe and The Green Mile, both of which showcased Cromwell’s considerable acting talent. Cromwell’s performances were so highly praised that he was soon cast in further television dramas including Angels in America and Succession, both of which air on HBO.
Meanwhile, Pulsipher is well-known for her roles on True Blood and as Detective Rollins’ sister, Kim, on Law & Order: SVU. Since Hernandez also plays in Kinberg’s Apple TV+ sci-fi series Invasion, which was renewed for a second season in December, the two will be working together once again. Sugar will also be Kinberg and Apple TV+’s second joint project. Farrell, an Irish veteran whose career has been distinguished by films like Black Hawk Down, In Bruges, Horrible Bosses, Phone Booth, and the 2003 Daredevil will complete the cast. An official announcement regarding the start of principal filming on Sugar has not yet been made.
