Less than two months from now, The CW will once again air the family business. This October, the prequel to Supernatural, The Winchesters, will premiere on the small screen, inviting fans back into the realm of saving lives and hunting monsters. The CW has released a new teaser for the debut episode, which focuses on the start of John Winchester’s (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell’s (Meg Donnelly) love. The new video shows John and Mary’s rocky first encounter and teases viewers with “a magical love story.” John has just gotten back from war and is trying to figure out what he wants to do with the rest of his life. During his narration, the trailer makes connections between his experiences on the battlefield and the horrible beasts that lurk there.
Mary, an experienced hunter, comes to the rescue, nevertheless. As the teaser progresses, we get a taste of the witty back-and-forth that will occur between John and Mary as they and a few other hunters go about doing what they do best. The Men of Letters is also mentioned again to remind viewers of their importance and Jensen Ackles is shown briefly reprising his role as Dean. The Winchesters, narrated by Dean Winchester, tells the “epic, unsung love tale” of John and Mary’s courtship and marriage, providing viewers with an intimate look at the struggles the couple overcame to preserve the world and their love. The sequel takes up not long after John Winchester returns from Vietnam.
During his investigation into his father’s background, he meets Mary, a hunter who is also on the prowl for some kind of explanation. What follows is a familiar tale for Supernatural viewers, only this time it involves the parents. Following Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith as the adult and younger versions of John and Mary on Supernatural, respectively, in the current day, we now have Matt Cohen and Amy Gumenick playing the roles of John and Mary in the SPN world. The Winchesters are the first Supernatural spin-off series to achieve significant success, following the failures of Wayward Sisters and Supernatural: Bloodlines. In June of 2021, it was revealed that Ackles and his wife Danneel Harris Ackles, through their firm Chaos Machine Productions, will serve as executive producers for the prequel.
After waiting for just a year, in May of 2022, The CW finally gave the go-light to bring the prequel to the series. Another veteran of “Supernatural,” Robbie Thompson, is working on the prequel as an EP and writer, while Glen Winter is also an EP. Demetria McKinney plays Ada, Nida Khurshid plays Latika, and Bianca Kajlich plays Millie Winchester in the prequel, along with Jojo Fleites as Carlos. Tuesday, October 11 is the launch date for The CW’s The Winchesters.
