Some of the best romances ever written have been based on a similar theme: forbidden love. Two people whose hearts beat in perfect sync with one other, but who are torn apart by expectations and constraints that shouldn’t matter. You may get a taste of Tyler Perry’s latest film, A Jazzman’s Blues, which presents the same tale in a fresh way by drawing connections to the past, via the film’s teaser trailer. An intimate scene between two young Black individuals opens the trailer’s whole length of two minutes and fifty-five seconds. The two of us shared our first kiss then.
Bayou, represented by Joshua Boone, stated, “Ain’t nothing felt so fantastic in all my life.” There’s not a more ideal setting for a first kiss than under a tree basking in the sun, but things didn’t look so bright for the newlyweds in the following scenes. Despite the challenges they face as a result of Bayou’s (Billy Bob Thornton) love for Leanne’s (Solea Pfeiffer) paper aircraft in this 1940s American romance, the pair remains together. It’s true that love may cause pain, but it hurts more when the person you love is taken away from you while you can do nothing to stop it.
The preview for the next episodes provokes profound feeling and an unquenchable want for love to triumph in the end, no matter how dire the circumstances. Perry has described his next film, A Jazzman’s Blues, as a labour of love. Perry has been waiting more than two decades for this project to finally materialise after writing the film’s screenplay in 1995. Perry told Variety that he is not worried about the outcome, despite having waited a long time for it. And once I do and give it up, there’s nothing I can do about it,” he remarked. Not that I can do anything about it now. That’s the way it is. I can’t hold on any longer.
Recently, Perry showed out some of the new film’s footage at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival. The release date for A Jazzman’s Blues on Netflix is set for September 23; the film will have its international debut at TIFF on September 11. Brent Antonello, Brad Benedict, Ryan Eggold, Kario Marcel, Austin Scott, Amirah Vann, Rob Wood, and Lana Young all have roles in the movie.
