Thor: Love and Thunder, one of Marvel’s most recent films, contributed to the studio’s successful summer. The comedy epic directed by Taika Waititi has earned over $700 million throughout the world. While there were many crazy performances and appearances in Thor: Ragnarok, one of the most glaring omissions was Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster. Thanks to concept art, we now have a clearer sense of Grandmaster’s initial role in Love and Thunder after the actor stole the show on his MCU debut in Thor: Ragnarok.
New concept art by Marvel Studios artist Laurent Ben-Mimoun shows Grandmaster in a battered and bruised state.
The protagonist wears robes of a similar hue to the ones he wears in Ragnarok, but he wears a sad expression and is on what looks to be a damaged ship. It appears that Grandmaster has been upgraded, and there is a robot nearby performing maintenance. It’s as though he’s acquired mechanical appendages. “Moon of humiliation” is what the photo’s caption says. Despite its obfuscation, this does provide a significant hint as to where in the film Goldblum would have been included. After Thor, Valkyrie, and Jane are faced off against Zeus, this event takes place, as shown by the severed head of Korg lying next to the robot.
It’s possible that Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher and the Team Thor of the Shadow Realm fought a slick black-and-white fight on the moon of shame. Bale said last month that he and Peter Dinklage had taped scenes with Jeff Goldblum that ultimately were cut from the film. Lena Headey, who stars in HBO’s Game of Thrones, was also cast in the movie but removed at the last minute. Likewise, it was said that Marvel Studios required Love and Thunder to be a minimum of two hours long. This concept image makes it that much more painful to accept Goldblum’s dismissal. The closing post-credit scene in Thor: Ragnarok hinted at the possibility of further adventures involving the character, and Goldblum once again did an excellent job of bringing Thor’s realm to life.
The Grandmaster was also introduced as Darryl’s funny new roommate in the Team Darryl Marvel Studios One Shot. Gorr and Grandmaster should have shared screen time together. Since more Goldblum in your life is always a good thing, I’m crossing my fingers that their unused sequences together will be included on the Blu-ray. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should go see Thor: Love and Thunder because it’s a hilariously colourful and wacky comedy. Below, you’ll find some conceptual artwork for Grandmaster. If you can’t get enough of Goldblum, though, the Extended Cut of Jurassic World: Dominion is now available on Digital HD and Blu-ray.
