As part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s ongoing reorganisation of its DC IP, the animated series Young Justice will allegedly not be renewed for a fifth season. According to TV Line’s exclusive source, the network’s plans to cancel the popular animated series Young Justice: Phantoms have not altered since the show’s season finale in June. Cancelling Young Justice would not be the first time Warner Bros. has overlooked the show’s undeniable excellence. The series was developed by Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman and is based on DC’s super squad, which was previously comprised of sidekicks like Robin (Jesse McCartney), Kid Flash (Jason Spisak), and Aqualad (Jason Alexander) (voiced by Khary Payton).
The programme was cancelled in 2013 after two successful seasons that featured hundreds of complicated characters and plots. Then, in 2019, Young Justice’s third season, Outsiders, premiered after a lengthy fan campaign. After its successful third season on Cartoon Network, Young Justice was able to transfer to HBO Max for its fourth and final season, Phantoms, which aired from January to June of this year. Since then, viewers have questioned whether or not the show would be revived. Unfortunately, the world isn’t fair, and it’s possible that Young Justice won’t be back. Some viewers may be holding out hope that HBO MAx is just being cautious before announcing Season 5 despite the show’s rocky last decade.
However, Warner Bros. Discovery is presently cancelling a lot of its shows on the streaming platform in an effort to save money as they combine. DC’s IP has been hit the hardest by the changes, with films like Batgirl being cancelled with only a few months to release and a reported $90 million already spent on development. Given the upheaval, it appears doubtful that Young Justice will be renewed for a fifth season on HBO Max. Supergirl and the Wonder Twins movies, along with Batgirl, are cancelled. Although the Black Canary-centric spinoff of Birds of Prey starring Jurnee Smollett is still in the works, its release is highly unlikely due to a lack of official information. Season 2 of Peacemaker, created by James Gunn, will continue production, and the Green Lantern live-action series is still in development with a 2024 premiere date in mind.
At long last, Blue Beetle made it through unscathed. We should still treat any DC news with caution until Warner Bros. Discovery unveils their 10-year plan for the DC Extended Universe, which is meant to help them straighten out their act and move ahead in a more methodical fashion. Current subscribers to HBO Max may watch all four seasons of Young Justice.
