Five new films are being added to The Collection in November, and they include a Spike Lee classic, a 4K digital restoration of a legendary Wong Kar Wai picture, and a film that was nominated for 12 Oscars last year. The Power of the Dog, a Neo-Western directed by Jane Campion that premiered in 2015 and was nominated for 12 Academy Awards (including Best Picture, Best Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Best Adapted Screenplay), stands out among the year’s newcomers. Campion won her first Oscar for her direction of this picture.
The Power of the Dog is Campion’s fourth film to be included in the Criterion Collection, following Sweetie, The Piano, and Angel at My Table. There will be three different versions of The Power of the Dog available for purchase: a 4K UHD + Blu-ray combo edition, a single Blu-ray disc edition, and a DVD-only edition. Two of Lee’s earlier films, Bamboozled and Do the Right Thing, have already been inducted into the Criterion Collection, making him another veteran director like Campion.
Malcolm X, his most recent film, will be released on 4K UHD + Blu-ray combination and normal Blu-ray, and it earned two Oscar nominations, including Best Actor for Denzel Washington. While the collector’s collection of The Infernal Affairs Trilogy will come with three Blu-ray discs, Vera Chytilová’s Daisies will only get one. The 4K digital restoration of Wong Kar Wai’s masterpiece, In the Mood for Love, comes in at number one. The film has been part of the library and can now be seen online in either a one-disc Blu-ray or two-disc DVD format. Since July, the Criterion Collection has released Okja, Raging Bull, and Devil in a Blue Dress on 4K UHD Blu-ray, making In the Mood for Love the 23rd film in the collection to be made available in this format.
