A new teaser for The Greatest Beer Run Ever shows Zac Efron attempting the ultimate challenge. To send a strong message to his pals serving overseas during the Vietnam War, John “Chickie” Donohue embarks on a mission as selfless as it is dangerous. The film, which is based on Donohue and Joanna Molloy’s New York Times bestseller The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty, and War, will premiere in September 30 in cinemas and on Apple TV+. Chickie, as depicted in the trailer, is a 26-year-old who has nothing better to do with his life except to spend it in the company of his buddies in Vietnam. His anger at the anti-war demonstrators prompts him to take action and buy the local guys a round of beer.
Even though Chickie’s intentions are good, the guys in the bar think it’s a hazardous and dumb move. Nonetheless, he goes through with it, and in the process, he finds an unusual friend in photographer Arthur Coates (Russell Crowe), who is on a mission to bring home to the public the true horrors of war and the individuals who are trapped in it. The adventure Chickie embarks on seems straightforward at first—a means to send a “sudsy thank you letter” to his pals—but things rapidly get out of hand as he realises what’s going on. Some of the boys in Chickie’s neighbourhood appreciate his attempt at bringing humour to a conflict zone he doesn’t fully comprehend, while others are annoyed by his naivete.
Chickie gains a new perspective on his goal as he goes through the battlefield in search of his companions and is confronted by coffins of young soldiers, platoons of children, and the slow understanding that neither side is simply good or bad. His love for his pals keeps him going, and he keeps trying to convince the regular Joes caught in the crossfire that their families back home care about them, even if they don’t agree with the war. Peter Farrelly, who directed Green Book, rewrote the screenplay for Skydance Media’s The Greatest Beer Run Ever with the aid of Brian Currie and Pete Jones.
The cast also includes Jake Picking, Will Ropp, Archie Renaux, Kyle Allen, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, and Bill Murray, in addition to Efron and Crowe. All of Ferrelly’s experience as a filmmaker appears to be being applied here. While he and his brother Bobby Farrelly got their start in the industry directing comedies like “Dumb and Dumber,” Peter Farrelly made a significant shift toward drama with “Green Book.” Now he’s taking the dramatic comedy approach to the big screen, though he’d later blend the two in Loudermilk with Bobby Mort.
The newly released clip demonstrates his talents as a storyteller by skillfully blending the comedic and serious aspects of the controversial issue that arises from smuggling alcohol into a war zone. On September 30th, The Greatest Beer Run Ever debuts in cinemas and on Apple TV+.
