In the God’s Creatures trailer, directed by Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer, the past and the present collide in the form of terrifying dreams. Emmy nominee Paul Mescal (Normal People) and Academy Award nominee Aisling Franciosi (Breaking the Waves) feature in this psychological drama in which the bond between a mother and son is put to the test (The Nightingale). After almost ten years away, Brian O’Hara has returned to his hometown in Ireland. His mother, Aileen (Watson), is overjoyed by his homecoming; she hasn’t seen him since he left town seven years ago. Sadly, the young man’s joyous return home is cut short when he is arrested and charged with a horrifying crime.
Aileen is torn as the evidence against her son mounts, between her desire to protect him and her moral responsibilities. Aileen’s life begins to spiral out of control as she commits a falsehood that has serious consequences for the case. Based on the teaser, it appears that an already bleak plot takes place in an even more foreboding environment. The trailer is full of the beautiful but dreary scenes one would anticipate from a movie about a seaside village in Ireland, and there is a pervasive sense of melancholy in the actions depicted.
With Aileen’s strong convictions about what is right and wrong and her son’s persistent pleas for his innocence, the film promises to be an exciting examination of this push-and-pull relationship. Neither Davis nor Holmer is new to the realm of dramatic directing, and God’s Creatures will be their second time working together. The two previously collaborated on the 2015 film The Fits, which followed a young tomboy with a dance skill who struggles to find her place in an all-girls dance club.
Her precarious condition worsens when she mysteriously begins having seizures. Positive reviews poured in, and the film was nominated for several awards (including a best first feature at the Spirits). We have no doubt that Davis and Holmer’s next film will once again wow audiences with its mounting tension thanks to their expertise in the genre. God’s Creatures, a new thriller from A24, will hit cinemas on September 30 and is sure to give viewers chills as they try to piece together what occurred that fateful night.
