The forthcoming film Blank takes the already terrifying concept of writer’s block and amplifies it to new levels of absurdity. The film’s trailer, which we are proud to share exclusively with you, stars Rachel Shelley as a writer with writer’s block who visits a futuristic spa in search of inspiration. The writer’s hideaway appears to be heaven at first look. The perfect getaway has everything a budding author could want: comfy chairs, a fire to snuggle up by, a fully stocked kitchen, complete silence, and an AI friend that can help with everything.
And there are none that could divert attention from the task at hand, which is even better. In this hypothetical future, virtual reality technology has advanced to the point that a person may construct whatever simulation they like with a simple gadget strapped to the side of their head, whether it is a calming jog in the countryside or anything else. Claire (Shelley) worries that, despite the comforts available to her, she has run out of things to tell. She has written several novels, but she is starting to run out of material, every writer’s biggest fear. A virus that appears to be wreaking havoc on the resort only makes her situation more difficult.
After the doors stop working, her artificial intelligence (AI) aide Rita (Heida Reed) starts acting up. Even though the host (Wayne Brady) attempts to tell Claire that it’s just some virus, the show’s increasing erratic behaviour is tremendously upsetting, making it even more difficult to get started writing. Even as she informs Claire she can’t go until she finishes her book, Rita’s robotic gestures and soothing voice and smile are disturbing.
With an all-powerful robot keeping her captive, transforming her beautiful simulations into hellscapes, and persistently trying to murder her if she doesn’t complete her writing, the world becomes resembles Misery and less of a paradise. On September 23 Blank will be available in cinemas and on demand.
