The nominees for the 2022 Saturn Awards have been revealed. These works will compete to be honoured as the finest in film and television for that year. Awards ceremonies typically recognise works in a variety of genres, therefore the titles considered for nominations may differ from those typically recognised at ceremonies like this. Voting is already underway at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films, with results revealed in late October, just in time for Halloween. It’s no surprise that The Batman is one of this year’s best Saturn Award hopefuls. The critically acclaimed film was lauded for its unique perspective on the beloved comic book character. Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) is an outsider who seeks to collaborate with the Gotham Police to uncover the plans of the mysterious criminal The Riddler (Paul Dano) for Gotham City.
Twelve awards were considered for the Matt Reeves film, including Best Superhero Film, Best Actor (Robert Pattinson), and Best Writing. A close second in terms of nominations is Guillermo Del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, which is nominated for Best Thriller Film, Best Direction, and Best Writing, among other honours, among its ten nods. The 40 total nominations were spread between both theatrical and television releases from Marvel Studios, such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: Love and Thunder. A24’s first guaranteed $100 million box office attraction, the fan favourite Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, received ten nominations, including Best Fantasy Film, Best Writing, and Best Actress for lead actress Michelle Yeoh.
Better Call Saul, a network TV staple, has concluded with its seventh and final Emmy nomination. One of Breaking Bad’s most popular characters, Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), was tracked on the programme as he evolved from being Jimmy McGill. Jonathan Banks, Tony Dalton, Patrick Fabian, and Michael Mando have all been nominated for Best Supporting Actor on the show, and the show itself is up for Best Thriller. Among the nominees, Superman & Lois and The Walking Dead matched with six nods apiece, while the surprise hits Ghosts and Big Sky tied with four nods apiece.
The streaming-only series with the most nominations was the wildly successful Stranger Things and the critically acclaimed Severance. A workplace series on Apple TV+ has received critical acclaim, while the Netflix blockbuster continues to follow the exploits of 80s youngsters in their battle against monsters. On October 25, a ceremony will be conducted to reveal the winners of the 50th annual Saturn Awards.
