According to Deadline, Tosin Cole from 61st Street has been cast as the series’ protagonist in Netflix’s upcoming superhero project Supacell. Rapman (real name Andrew Onwabolu) produced a television series featuring six Black characters with superpowers who are from South London. Cole will portray Michael Lasaki, the main character. Rapman spoke about the role, revealing that Michael is a “van driver, an everyday working man, who’s deep in love” with Dionne, who is portrayed by actress Adelayo Adedayo. Next Monday, filming for the series will start in South London. Sebastian Thiel of Dreaming Whilst Black will helm three of the six episodes, with Rapman serving as the principal director and showrunner.
“Ordinary folks who wear their everyday clothing and mature with time,” is how Rapman characterises his characters. “Put it this way: We’ve got all the abilities you can get in Marvel, and they come to South London,” the speaker said. Rapman noted that Supacell will be unlike any other superhero drama we have yet to see. Even if I adore Marvel and DC, you can always count on things turning out for the best in our tale since it’s a grounded superpowers programme.
Despite being heroic characters, they all have serious flaws. In addition to Cole and Adedayo, the cast also features Rayxia Ojo as Sharleen, Josh Tedeku as Tazer, Calvin Demba as Rodney, Eric Kofi Abrefa as Andre, and Giacomo Mancini as Spud. Following The Umbrella Academy’s successful adaption, the streamer appears to try its hand at the superhero subgenre once more. The new show is a component of Netflix’s extensive marketing campaign for its Netflix UK division.
Along with Rapman, Netflix’s Anna Ferguson and Steve Searle serve as executive producers. Sheila Nortley will act as Block2’s producer and associate producer with Mark Hedges as the series producer. Additionally, executive producing are Mouktar Mohammed and Henrietta Lee from New Wave. Co-producer Geraldine Hawkins is involved. The streamer has not announced a release date for Supacell.
