Sony’s next Kraven the Hunter movie, in contrast to the vast majority of modern blockbusters, will be shot fully on location. In an exclusive interview with THR, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who plays the Spider-Man villain of the same name, made the announcement. Kraven, directed by J.C. Chandor, will premiere on January 13 of next year (All is Lost, A Most Violent Year). Taylor-Johnson compared the production of Kraven with Bullet Train, his latest picture, and pointed out the differences. Brad Pitt’s picture was made fully in a studio using a soundstage. Taylor-Johnson pointed out in particular that the setting of a film may have an effect on the performance.
What he said was as follows: “Kraven will benefit much from being shot fully in real locations. As a result, our love story will get a wonderful new chapter. In addition, it differentiates Kraven’s appearance from the typical Marvel theatre costume. This persona has to be immersed in the actual world. For the sake of the story’s verisimilitude, it’s crucial information to include. You take in your surroundings and work within them while you’re going around barefoot on the streets.” Taylor-Johnson, as listeners will recall, is not afraid to share his personal experiences.
As Pietro Maximoff, brother of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), he appears in the Marvel film Avengers: Age of Ultron. With his newest Marvel part taking place outside of the MCU, it seems like Taylor-Johnson is having a unique experience. While CGI will be used extensively in Kraven, it’s fascinating to think that the picture may be shot in its intended setting. Surrounding Taylor-Johnson with a strong cast is a priority for Sony, and the film features Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) in the role of Kraven’s love interest Calypso. Film villains Christopher Abbott (Black Bear) and Alessandro Nivola (The Many Saints of Newark) are played by those actors. Levi Miller (Pan) plays a youthful version of the eponymous character, while Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus) portrays Chameleon, Kraven’s sibling and a fellow Spider-Man adversary.
Recently, people laughed at Russell Crowe as Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder, and now he’s portraying the father of Kraven in this film. Kraven is a longtime adversary of Marvel’s Spider-Man who has featured in comics since August 1964. Obviously, he’s a hunter who considers Spider-Man to be the pinnacle of prey. He is commonly included among the Sinister Six. Although Sony had planned to have him appear on film as early as the aborted sequels and spin-offs from the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man flicks, Taylor-portrayal Johnson will be the first time the character has appeared in real action.
The premiere of Kraven the Hunter is set for January 13, 2023.
