With Ryan Gosling (The Gray Man) in the starring role, Universal Pictures and 87North’s upcoming action thriller The Fall Guy, based on the 1980s legendary action series, already had huge star power. Now, Emily Blunt, who has been in several action films including Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and Sicario (2015), has been cast opposite Gosling. The British actress will reportedly co-star with Gosling in the next action flick, according to Deadline.
In addition to The Fall Guy, Blunt has just wrapped up work on Oppenheimer, a film version of Kai Bird’s 2005 biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film will feature the actress Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Dane DeHaan, and Matt Damon and will be directed by Christopher Nolan.
Colt Seavers (Lee Majors), the protagonist of the original version of The Fall Guy, is a stuntman who, when employment in his field dries up, turns to bounty hunting as a means of making ends meet. The plot of the film is rumoured to be quite close to the book.
In an earlier interview, director David Leitch (Bullet Train) confirmed that filming will begin in Australia in October. The filmmaker said in an exclusive interview that the remake will be a radical departure from the original series, focusing instead on the exploits of a single stuntman who gets mixed up in some kind of dramatic mayhem. There will be excitement and adventure, and the plan is to turn this into a blockbuster summer film.
With the help of Universal’s enthusiastic backing and Ryan’s insightful contributions to the script, we’ll be rolling cameras in October. We are currently in the pre-production phase. While specific story points have not been discussed as of yet, Leitch has stated that he and Gosling, as well as the film’s executive producer Kelly McCormick (who collaborated with Leitch on Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), are “certainly going to have a lot of fun playing with the movie.”
Gosling will also play Ken in the live-action Barbie film, and Blunt will portray Liza Drake in the upcoming Netflix film Pain Hustlers. Not all of the cast members have been revealed just yet, but with Gosling and Blunt in the lead roles, the film version is shaping up to be quite the A-lister. Opening on March 1, 2024, The Fall Guy is a certain possibility.
