The theatrical trailer for Triangle of Sadness, NEON’s third Palme d’Or winner in a row, was published. This much-anticipated indictment of the top 1% will hit theatres on October 7 and tells the story of a cruise for the ultra-rich that collapses, leaving its survivors to fend for themselves on an island. Ruben stlund, who won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for his comedy The Square in 2017, comes back with another award-winning satire, Triangle of Sadness, five years later.
This debut English-language film from the Swedish writer-director flips the social order on its head by exposing the sleazy connection between wealth and attractiveness. It had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Carl (Harris Dickinson, Beach Rats and County Lines) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean, Don’t Sleep and Blood in the Water) are a famous Hollywood couple who are invited on a luxury cruise for the ultra-rich, and the film’s main focus is on them and their drunken boat captain (Woody Harrelson, True Detective and Natural Born Killers). The trailer for Triangle of Sadness does an excellent job of not just establishing the film’s tone, but also of questioning privilege through its use of tight situations, awkward demands, and melodramatic music.
Watching this, one may get a taste of the absurdity, sarcasm, and disgusting factor that split spectators at Cannes. Zlatko Buri, a Croatian actor, has joined the likes of Woody Harrelson, Patricia Dickinson, and James Dean in the Pusher trilogy directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. Cast members also include Oliver Ford Davies (Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace), Iris Berben (Eddie the Eagle), Sunnyi Melles (The Awakening of Motti Wolkenbruch), Henrik Dorsin (Solsidan), Dolly De Leon (Verdict), Vicki Berlin (Forbrydelsen), and Arvin Kananian (Aniara). stlund’s previous collaborations with Fredrik Wenzel on Force Majeure and The Square provide inspiration for the film’s cinematography, while Gabriel de Knopp and Daphne Koutra provide art direction.
Alessandro Del Vigna, Micah Green, Andreas Roald, James Benjamin Shannon, Jim Stark, Daniel Steinman, Bradley Thomas, Dan Wechsler, and Jamal Zeinal Zade serve as executive producers. The producers are Philippe Bober and Erik Hemmendorff. On October 7th, you may see the film Triangle of Sadness in cinemas across North America.
