It’s true that Parks and Creation alum Audrey Plaza is more well-known for her comedic chops, but her performance in the upcoming action-packed crime thriller Emily the Criminal, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, was compelling enough to have her colleague Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) thinking that she will be a good fit for the next Tomb Raider movie as its lead heroine Lara Croft. I’m going to be on Tonight Show. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon promoting Emily the Criminal, Plaza said that the cover shot from the film published in an edition of MovieMaker led Wright to believe that she had been cast as the next Lara Croft.
Lara Croft’s distinctive tank top is featured prominently in the portrait of Plaza’s character from the forthcoming crime drama. Fallon inquired as to whether Plaza would be interested in taking on additional action movie parts in the future, and Plaza alluded to the success of her debut performance in the genre by saying that Wright had mistaken her for the athletic archaeologist. That’s when my pal Edgar Wright contacted me, “Oh my goodness, you’re the new Lara Croft? Is it true that you’re the newest Tomb Raider? This is the ‘Tomb Raider’ protagonist. And I said, “Not so fast, Edgar.” “Emily the Criminal” is my movie,” Plaza declared. She said, “[Wright] truly felt I was cast as the new ‘Tomb Raider.'” Then I did some research and discovered they are actively seeking actors for this part. And I said, “Well, there you have it. Whatever, I’m playing the new Tomb Raider. Jimmy Fallon, when shown a snapshot of Plaza on the cover of MovieMaker next to Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft, nodded in agreement, suggesting that he, too, believes Plaza is the next Lara Croft.
Irma Vep’s Alice Vikander had in 2018 become the new Lara Croft and was expected to reprise her role in an upcoming sequel intended to be written by Misha Green (Lovecraft Country) (Lovecraft Country). After MGM handed over the intellectual property (IP) rights to producer Graham King after 9 years, Alicia Vikander stepped out from her part. Plaza’s finding that casting is presently underway to fill the part suggests that a Tomb Raider sequel is still quite feasible. Emily, The Criminal, which Plaza directed, had its world premiere on January 24 at Sundance and is set to have a limited theatrical release on August 12. John Patton Fordm, who also wrote the screenplay, makes his directing debut with this film. Emily, the protagonist, is a college student whose rising debt forces her into a life of crime.
