Nothing increases anticipation for a programme like a series of cast and crew changes just before production begins. Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer for The Walking Dead Universe, has taken control of the Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) spinoff programme and is bringing it back on track. CB reports that Gimple made a public statement in which he specified both the date (2023) and the place (both AMC and AMC+) of the launch of the season. With the eleventh season of the main series coming to a close, Gimple shared exclusive details on many spinoffs presently in the works at the Talking Dead special Talking Dead: The Walking Dead Universe Preview 2022.
After Melissa McBride left the programme as Carol Peletier, AMC published a statement saying, “Relocating to Europe proved logistically unsustainable for Melissa at this time,” letting viewers know that the unnamed series will be set in another country. A French setting was announced for the Daryl spinoff by Gimple on August 7. The enigmatic “Variant” zombies mentioned in The Walking Dead: World Beyond’s post-credits epilogue have been revealed to represent the link between TWD and Reedus’ spinoff, according to the show’s executive producer. “Set in France, Daryl’s spinoff is an international hit. The events in [The World Beyond coda] just hint at what Daryl will go through in the future.
As a matter of fact, Daryl is a total outsider. Daryl would be a social misfit among strangers. In France, a country in the midst of an apocalypse, it’s something else completely. He is now in a position where he must not only rediscover who he is but also adjust to a society in which he is likely to no longer be among the people who know and understand him best.” In 2023, viewers will get a better glimpse at some of these phantom walkers, known as “Variants,” and of course, more Daryl Dixon. TWD Season 11’s official trailer has Ross Marquand’s Aaron saying, “…I’ve heard stories of walkers who can scale walls and unlock doors.”
A look inside the French lab where these Variants may (or may not) have been developed was provided to viewers of the third franchise series set in the TWD world, The World Beyond, expanding the scope of the franchise. Season 1 of The Walking Dead aired in 2010, long before any spinoffs were announced. At that time, CDC virologist Dr Edwin Jenner (Noah Emmerich) stated to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) that there were stronger and quicker “variant cohorts.” David Zabel, a former executive producer on ER, will take over as showrunner on the as-yet-unnamed Daryl spinoff following the resignation of Angela Kang.
Reedus gave encouragement to fans at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con by claiming, “Carol and Daryl’s tale isn’t done yet,” despite the fact that there has been no more casting news since McBride left the show. There is currently no release date for Daryl Dixon’s spinoff, but fans of The Walking Dead may tune in to the launch of the new series Tales of the Walking Dead on AMC and AMC+ on August 14.
