Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part 1 is finally nearing its scheduled July 14, 2023 release date, after multiple development delays and interruptions. Dead Reckoning was not disclosed as the subtitle for the seventh film in the Mission: Impossible franchise until CinemaCon in April of this year. However, it seems that not even the film’s stars knew what was going on.
When discussing the next action blockbuster with Steve Weintraub, Simon Pegg acknowledged that he, like the rest of us, had to look up the title. When Weintraub asked Pegg how long he’d known Dead Reckoning would be the name of the next two films in the legendary franchise, Pegg said that neither director Chris McQuarrie nor anyone else involved in the production had divulged the term. “What do you think? Not from Chris McQuarrie, but on the day the trailer was released. That’s what the preview told me. Sadly, I was not informed.
In response, I asked McQ, “Dead Reckoning?” through text message. Were you going to tell us that at some point?’ There was talk of it being something different, but that’s fine with me. That’s amazing since it brings to mind something… the original title of “Land of the Dead” was “Dead Reckoning.” Dead Reckoning is the name of the movie I’ll be appearing in.” Although Pegg was surprised by the news, he agreed that the title is appropriate for the narrative of the two films. When I questioned him about the title, he replied, “In a word, yes. Yes, without a doubt.”
Filming for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 2 began in March, and Weintraub wanted to know how things were progressing thus far. To which Pegg said, “We’re only getting started here. As a result, we’ve circled back around to square one. It’s a huge advantage that we can shoot both films simultaneously; there are still a few loose ends to tie up with Episode 7 before we can go on to Episode 8. But, yep, we’re currently making Dead Reckoning 2.”
Benji Dunn, an IMF technician, was added to the cast of Mission Impossible III, which starred Simon Pegg in 2006. Since then, he has been in every Mission: Impossible film, including the most recent one, Fallout (2018). Back in the major role is Tom Cruise, who will be accompanied by Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and Cary Elwes, with Esai Morales as the film’s principal adversary.
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part 2’s cast also includes Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, and Janet McTeer, as previously revealed. McQuarrie wrote the script and is directing the picture. Cruise, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Chris Brock have all signed on to produce the film under his direction and have all contributed to the script. The first picture in the Dead Reckoning duology, directed by Brian De Palma and based on the 1966 TV series of the same name, kicked off the long-running action spy film franchise.
Cruise is in charge of the creative direction of the Mission: Impossible film franchise, which has been on an upward trend since the fourth film in the series, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, with each subsequent film grossing more than the last, culminating in the $800 million worldwide gross of the most recent film, Mission: Impossible — Fallout. Top Gun: Maverick’s massive box office success this year means that Cruise will likely aim to top it with Mission: Impossible 6 next year.
Moviegoers can expect to see Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1 in cinemas on July 14, 2023, with Part 2 presently in production and planned to hit screens on June 28, 2024. Tomorrow, we will publish the in-depth interview we had with Pegg about his Apple TV+ animated film, Luck.
