The Black Phone, a film by Blumhouse, will be available on digital platforms and Blu-ray this month. Based on Joe Hill’s short story of the same name, director Scott Derrickson’s film stars Ethan Hawke and young actor Mason Thames in a ghostly horror thriller. Box office receipts for the film were $143 million, and it has an 85% fresh rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. In The Black Phone, a nerdy but bright 13-year-old named Finney is kidnapped by a cruel killer and held captive in a soundproof cellar. He finds a ringing phone on the wall and realises it’s been there for some time.
Past victims of the killer may be heard on the other side, and they are determined that Finney will not share their fate. Deleted sequences, featurettes with cast and crew, Derrickson’s short film ShadowProwler, and a feature commentary are among the special features exclusive to the Blu-ray and digital release. One of the documentaries, titled “Ethan Hawke’s Evil Turn,” delves into Hawke’s portrayal of The Grabber and how he overcame his long-standing distaste to villainous parts in order to become this chilling antagonist. The most important aspects of making The Black Phone are covered, such as how the tale was adapted and how the director’s vision was realised.
A featurette called Devil in the Design delves further into the production design, covering everything from the sets and costumes to the hair and makeup. The film also has Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone in supporting roles, in addition to Hawke as The Grabber and Thames as Finney. The screenplay was co-written by Derrickson and his frequent writing partner C. Robert Cargill. On Digital August 12, and on Blu-ray and DVD on August 16, you may acquire The Black Phone with engaging extras. Below you’ll find a summary of the film, a trailer, and an interview with Derrickson.

SCOTT DERRICKSON’S FEATURE COMMENTARY (AS PRODUCER, CO-WRITER, AND DIRECTOR)
Finney Shaw, a reticent but bright 13-year-old, is kidnapped by a vicious killer and held in a cellar where he can’t be heard crying for help. Finney learns that the killer’s prior victims’ voices are audible to him when a wall-mounted telephone that had been removed from the outlet begins to ring. In addition, they are adamant that Finney not experience the same fate as them. The Black Phone is produced, directed, and co-written by Scott Derrickson, the writer-director of Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Marvel’s Doctor Strange, and stars four-time OscarĀ® nominee Ethan Hawke in the scariest role of his career and introduces Mason Thames in his first ever film role.
