We’ve all fantasised about being a social media influencer, being paid to travel and receiving commercial sponsorships. A lot of us think it’s a fantasy. It’s a fresh start that makes it possible to quit your day job and start your own business. In a new promo for her upcoming Hulu feature, Not Okay, Zoey Deutch is following precisely that fantasy. Her character, Danni Sanders, is a want-to-be social media influencer who’s willing to do anything it takes for success and wealth. A terrorist strike in Paris provides Danni with an even bigger chance to develop her fan base, something that proves to be a disaster.
Danni’s social media theft is shown in a new clip posted to the film’s Twitter account. Danni constructs a fictitious website as the basis of her scheme, lying about it to her mother in the process. As a final touch, she added her passport to the images in order to make the film look like it had been made in France, with the flag’s colours prominently featured. A baguette (because what could be more Parisian than that?) and a lesson in applying Euro-chic cosmetics are all part of the act for the wannabe influencer.
Set up a picture studio in your own house and don a beret to make the statement even more clear. Danni “poses” in front of the City of Love’s gorgeous architecture and shows off her croissant and coffee at a sidewalk cafĂ© while showcasing her Photoshop skills. Danni will meet Dylan O’Brien’s Colin on her “adventure,” and the two will start a love connection based on falsehoods. Danni will find herself in the core of Paris’ catastrophic events, where she will encounter Mia Isaac’s Rowan, in full victim mode, following the events in Paris. Rowan and Danni, both of whom have been through true suffering, will form a bond that will come crashing down when Rowan learns the truth.
Embeth Davidtz, Karan Soni, Brennan Brown, Nadia Alexander, Tia Dionne Hodge, Negin Farsad, Sarah Yarkin, and Dash Perry will all star in the feature-length film. Quinn Shephard returns to feature filmmaking with Not Okay, her follow-up to her breakout 2017 film Blame. Not Okay premieres July 29 on Hulu, and you can check out the latest clip below.
