As of July 22, Netflix has revealed that a spin-off and sequel to The Gray Man, the new spy thriller directed by the brothers Russo, are in the works. The original film premiered in select cinemas on July 15 before being released on Netflix a week later. To begin with, it seems natural that there would be additional adaptations of Mark Greaney’s novel series of the same name that began in 2009. The book series presently consists of 11 novels, with the 12th slated to be released in 2023. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the recently released picture is now resting at a 91% audience rating.
For the sequel, Ryan Gosling will once again feature with Joe and Anthony Russo as well as Stephen McFeely (The Electric State, Avengers: Endgame, and Captain America: Civil War) as the film’s co-screenwriter. “The audience reception to The Gray Man has been nothing short of fantastic,” the brothers said in a statement accompanying the announcement of the sequel. We are extremely grateful for the worldwide interest in this video that we have received. Ryan and I had always planned to expand the Gray Man’s world, and we’re happy that Netflix has announced a sequel and a second script we’re excited to talk about shortly,” the filmmakers said.
It has been confirmed that Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool, Zombieland) would write the script for the spin-off. Former CIA officer and ex-fellow Court Gentry (Gosling) is pursued by a former colleague, Lloyd Hansen (Evans) when he uncovers the CIA’s darkest secrets and he is put on the wanted list by Hansen. While on the run from international assassins, Gentry relies on the help of Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) to keep him one step ahead of them. With a sequel on the way, this is the third AGBO film to release on Netflix and the company’s second consecutive #1 international opening.
The Chris Hemsworth-starring Extraction from 2020 is Netflix’s 5th most popular picture, with a 2023 sequel planned. Global Film Head Scott Stuber remarked, “With The Gray Man, the Russos crafted an edge-of-your-your-seat extravaganza that audiences around the world are adoring.” This partnership with AGBO and the Gray Man crew is something we’re looking forward to. There are also Billy Bob Thornton and Rege-Joan Page in the cast of the first picture, as well as Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura and Alfre Woodard in the supporting cast. Only Ryan Gosling has been confirmed to be returning at this point. After directing the picture with his brother and writing the script with McFeely and Markus, Joe Russo also wrote the screenplay.
Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, who produced the first picture under their Roth Kirschenbaum Films banner, will join the Russos, Gosling, and McFeely on the sequel’s production team. Mike Larocca will produce AGBO alongside the Russos. Despite the fact that the sequel to The Gray Man is now under development, there is no information on a release date for the picture. The first film of a brand-new espionage series is now available on Netflix.
