Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai was the subject of one of today’s early SDCC panels. Original 1984 horror/comedy film director Joe Dante’s prequel series explores the narrative of the hellish monsters who originally appeared in the film. When a young kid discovers the beloved Mogwai Gizmo and chooses to protect it from bad spirits and monsters, the plot will revolve around him and his family. Executive producers Tze Chun and Brendan Hay, as well as art director Tara Rueping, were on the panel and provided guidance. The trio divulged several pieces of information about the show, including the fact that Zach Galligan, the original voice of Gremlins, would appear in a cameo role on the show.
As a prequel to the original movie, set in China, Billy Peltzer will not appear in this series, but fans may anticipate him to play a supporting role. In addition to Sandra Oh, Bowen Yang, George Takei, and Randall Park, he joins a guest voice cast. Steven Spielberg produces the show, which Chun also writes and shows runs (Jurassic Park). Even before it appeared on streaming services and networks, the programme has already been renewed for a second season.
However, the first episode was shown at the Annecy International Film Festival earlier this year, and the audience responded positively. An impressive voice ensemble is on hand to lend their talents to Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, including Ming-Na Wen as Fong Wing, James Hong as Grandpa, and BD Wong, Izaac Wang, and Gabrielle Green as Elle, Riley Greene, and Gizmo, among others. Images of the characters and their voice performers were revealed by HBO Max in May. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai has yet to get an official release date from HBO Max.
Synopsis:
When the Wing family discovers a mystery monster in 1920s Shanghai, the film takes viewers back in time with its rich Chinese culture and mythology. In order to return Gizmo to his family, Sam Wing, the youngest member of the Wing family, accepts the risky challenge. A young street pickpocket named Elle joins Sam and Gizmo, and the three of them go on adventures in Chinese folklore, encountering and occasionally fighting colourful creatures and spirits. An industrialist with an ever-expanding army of Gremlins pursues them as they travel.
