It’s a great time for the entertainment business, especially for directors, whose involvement in upcoming films is frequently confirmed or hinted at during San Diego Comic-Con. Our “Filmmakers on Directors” panel, held in Hall H and featuring some of the most legendary directors in film, especially action and sci-fi, will be the most exciting event of the year for film and television announcements. Chad Stahelski, the director of all 4 John Wick films, Andrew Stanton, the filmmaker of John Carter, and Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate were among the panellists. Alongside excellent news from Stahelski, the most exciting part of the panel was Miller’s announcement that his new film, The Goon will be published straight on Netflix.
This is Miller’s first directorial effort since Dark Fate, which he directed in 2019. There have been several years of development hell for the picture based on Eric Powell’s comic book that is released by Dark Horse. After working on Scott Pilgrim versus the World, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Thor: The Dark World as a creative supervisor and director, Miller made his directorial debut in 2016 with Deadpool. For his work in visual effects on Star Wars: The Old Republic and Mass Effect 2, which won him nominations for 2010 and 2011, he was nominated for a Visual Effects Society Award as best director.
Prior to his work on the Merc with a Mouth, he had directed several short films. As well as being the executive producer on both of Sonic the Hedgehog’s blockbuster films, Miller also created the Netflix series Love, Death + Robots, where he wrote and directed two episodes. A Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program went to the director of the science fiction anthology series in 2019. Another Emmy nomination came in the form of Outstanding Sound Editing in a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Outstanding Animation.
