Joo Won stars as an amnesiac hero who must race against time to stop a pandemic from spreading by capturing the “single antidote” to the virus and transporting her to North Korea in Netflix’s forthcoming South Korean action-thriller Carter. “One scene, one cut” action film, Carter looks to be an attempt at 1917-style filmmaking, but the trailer is edited as though it were shot in one continuous take.
It hints at a variety of action sequences, from hand-to-hand combat to large-scale helicopter dogfights.
In the trailer’s opening scenes, we’re introduced to the film’s titular hero. Because he’s a walking time bomb with a scar on his back, a voice in his brain tells him to listen to the instructions it gives him. A mutant virus has infected over eight million individuals throughout the United States and North Korea, according to reports. Carter is tasked with finding a girl who may hold the secret to humanity’s survival and escorting her through the DMZ, into the North, in order to rescue the planet and himself. It’s a cross between Crank and Children of Men. In addition to his work on The Villainess, director Jung Byung-Gil is likely most recognised for his work on Carter, which also included a memorable action sequence shot in a single take. He’s going all in now.
While some parts in the clip appear like they might have come from out of the Chris Hemsworth Netflix film Extraction, others look like they could have come straight out of a Fast and Furious movie, albeit with some noticeable rear-projection work. With kidnappings, assassinations, and the CIA on his tail, Carter is forced to deal with all of this while attempting to discover his identity. With a few notable successes under its belt, Netflix’s efforts in Korea are paying off nicely.
To this day, Squid Game is the streamer’s most-watched original show. Aside from Money Heist: Korea and its predecessors, the studio has also produced blockbusters such as Hellbound, Kingdom, and All of Us Are Dead. Lee Sung-Jae, Jeong So-ri, and Kim Bo-min also feature in Carter. The movie will be available on Netflix on August 5th.
Synopsis:
‘Carter’ awakens two months after the terrible virus that destroyed the United States and North Korea sprang from the DMZ. He has a deadly explosion in his mouth and a weird contraption in his skull. He’s given directions by an unexplained voice in his head. Without her, the bomb might go off at any moment, unless he saves her. The CIA, on the other hand, and a North Korean coup attempt are closing in fast.
