A cinematic version of Rosemarie DeWitt’s 2010 novel Out Of My Mind will feature Luke Kirby and Judith Light. It has been confirmed by Deadline that the three actors have been cast in the new Disney+ remake. It follows Melody Brooks (Phoebe-Ray Taylor), a cerebral palsy student who is denied the same privileges as the other pupils at her school.
Young instructor Katherine (played by Courtney Taylor) urges Melody to engage in conventional education when she realises how brilliant she is. Diane, Melody’s mother, will be played by DeWitt. The character is portrayed as a fierce protector and protectorate of her daughter. The Professor (directed by Wayne Roberts), Song of Back and Neck (directed by Paul Lieberstein), and Arizona are among DeWitt’s prior projects from 2018. (directed by Jonathan Watson). Chuck, Melody’s loving father, will be played by Kirby. His past credits include Clark Johnson’s 2020 film Percy, Nia DaCosta’s 2018 film Little Woods, and Another Kind of Wedding, all of which were directed by him (directed by Pat Kiely). Mrs. V, the Brooks family’s next-door neighbour, will be played by Light.
Despite her eccentricities, Mrs. V has a genuine concern for Melody. His past projects include Tick, Tick… Boom! (directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda), Before You Know It (directed by Hannah Pearl Utt), and We’ll Never Have Paris (directed by Emmanuelle Chriqui) (directed by Simon Helberg and Jocelyn Towne). Michael Chernus will portray Melody’s instructor, Mr. Dimming, in the film. Trivia coach Mr. Dimming is also a member of the school’s faculty and staff. Sharon Draper penned the book that served as the inspiration for the film’s screenplay in 2010. Amber Sealey, who directed Kirby’s No Man of God in 2021, will direct Out of My Mind.
Daniel Stiepleman created the screenplay for the 2018 film On the Basis of Sex, which he also directed (directed by Mimi Leder). Producers Peter Saraf and Dan Angel will oversee the production of the picture, which will be executive produced by Michael B. Clark, Alex Turtletaub, Robert Kessel, Dave Calver Jones, and Brian Gott. The film’s production crew also includes members of the cerebral palsy and AAC (augmentative and alternative communication device) communities. A joint venture between Participant Media, Big Beach Films, Everywhere Studios, and Disney Branded Television will create the film. Out Of My Mind’s Disney+ launch date has yet to be officially confirmed.
