October 4 marks the release of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray and DVD. The U.S. edition of the Blu-ray will also contain a Digital Copy, but exclusively in the United States. In addition to the 10 episodes, there will be a slew of supplementary features that focus on various facets of the series, including interviews with various members of the production crew. On HBO Max or at any major retailer, you can download or stream the digital edition of the series now. Magic, Kareem, Riley, & the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s by Jeff Pearlman serves as the basis for this series.
From 1980 through 1991, nearly 300 interviews were used to tell the Lakers’ journey in the book. There was an abundance of celebrity and unrivalled skill on this squad during this time period covered by Pearlman. He doesn’t hold back while discussing the team’s rivalries, ups and downs, and Hollywood lives. Magic Johnson’s announcement that he has HIV is the climax of the drama, which no one expected to see coming. Jason Clarke as Jerry West; Adrien Brody as Pat Riley; Gaby Hoffmann as Claire Rothman; Tracy Letts as Jack McKinney; Jason Segel as Paul Westhead; Julianne Nicholson as Cranny McKinney; Hadley Robinson as Jeanie Buss; DeVaughn Nixon as Norm Nixon; Solomon Hughes as Karem Abdul-Jabbar; and others all appear in the show as various characters.
Adam McKay is the show’s executive producer and director of the pilot episode. All three showrunners (Max Borenstein and Jim Hecht) are also executive producers, along with Kevin Messick from Hyperobject Industries. Exec producers and writers include Rodney Barnes. Jason Shuman and Scott Stephens are two of the show’s other executive producers. With a star-studded cast, the Lakers players’ personal and professional lives are chronicled as they ascend to greatness and enjoy the high life. Some, including Johnson, have criticised the series because of its historical flaws. Other members of the Lakers’ ’80s squad had similar sentiments.

If you’re a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers, especially during the Showtime era, this is a must-see. If its veracity is in question, it nevertheless serves as a warning story about overindulgence and the dangers of going too far.
