It’s a happy day for David Bowie fans everywhere! “Cinematic Odyssey” which will not only showcase the life of the music legend, but also shed light on the various art forms he explored, including dance, painting, sculpture, screenwriting and live theatre, has been announced by Neon and Universal Pictures. The documentary will encompass the artist’s creative, musical and spiritual journey.
Brett Morgen will direct the film. On September 16, the film is going to be released in the United States. While Bowie’s 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is the inspiration for the film’s title, the film itself is based on a song from that album that introduced the world to Bowie’s renowned Ziggy Stardust stage persona. The film will cover Bowie’s career from 1970 to 1977, but it will also focus on his latter years.
The teaser for the film has already revealed that it will not be your typical documentary. There are several aspects of the singer’s influence that are highlighted in this clip, including how he influenced music culture throughout the world and how he broke industry standards. According to the teaser, the documentary is trippy enough to throw the viewer into a state of musical trance. This is the first-ever authorised film about David Bowie, which also includes access to his personal archives, including all master recordings, as well as 35mm and 16mm reels of never-before-seen performances, all of which will be included in the upcoming feature, as well as 40 new, remastered tracks from his catalogue.
He co-produced the picture with Andrew Murray as well as scripted and directed. Tony Visconti, Bowie’s longtime producer, acts as the film’s music producer. It was for Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck in 2015 that Morgen received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Direction for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program. He previously worked on Say It Loud: A Celebration of Black Music in America. Crossfire Hurricane, a documentary on the Rolling Stones, was also created by him.
