By modifying its methodology for Season 2, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal wants to continue innovating animation. Primitive creator and director Genndy Tartakovsky explained to Entertainment Weekly how the forthcoming season would expand the show’s prehistoric world to include various tribes and groups. When Spear and Fang met in the first season of Primal, they were surprised to discover that they had a special bond.
The two fought against other dinosaurs and ferocious apes as they traversed a treacherous prehistoric world together. Each episode introduces a new obstacle for Spear and Fang to conquer, despite the season’s concentration on their friendship. Season 2 will see a shift in this, as the advent of a human from a different culture, Mira, in the Season 1 finale will alter the very fabric of the Primal world. According to Tartakovsky, “The arrival of Mira sheds light on the possibility that there is another, more evolved civilisation out there. You’re immediately drawn to movies like ‘Pharaohs,’ ‘Stargate,’ and ‘10,000 BC’ when you’re studying ancient civilizations.
It dawned on me that the topics we were discussing were a little too trite and formulaic. So we dismantled everything and began again, and came up with a new direction. For the duration of [episodes] 11 to 20, there is only one tale. Because of this, it’s quite different than the first season.” There will be many more people in Primal Season 2, but the focus will remain on the special link between Spear and Fang. With all due respect to the series’ ultraviolence, Tartakovsky understands that what keeps fans coming back for more is the series’ ability to construct intricate relationships even without utilising words as a technique. Season 2 will continue similar themes, as Tartakovsky explains. In his own words:
“Even more emotionally challenging is [Season 2]. As the season progresses, the action takes on a magnitude we haven’t experienced before. It has a startling effect. People are either going to love it or loathe it, but I’m having a blast as a storyteller with this one. It has a heavy metal vibe to it. Still pulpy, but in the heart of the tale between Fang and Spear, it becomes nuts. The best surprise of the first season was that one. It wasn’t the violence that people noticed; it was their bond. That’s where your passion lies as a filmmaker and storyteller.”
Adult Swim will screen the premiere of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal Season 2 at midnight on July 21 before making it accessible for streaming on HBO Max the following day.
