Reasonable Doubt, the first scripted drama from Onyx Collective, has a release date and a first peek on Hulu. New episodes will be released weekly on Tuesdays for the forthcoming legal drama beginning on September 27th. Director and executive producer Kerry Washington (Scandal) provides an overview of the plot in the show’s first look trailer. “A star” is how she defines Emayatzy Corinealdi, who plays Jax Stewart in the programme. While introducing new members of the cast, Washington says she is thrilled to be working with folks she has “knew and loved for a long time.” Finally, Washington expresses her pride in the event and what she hopes viewers will take away from it in the closing video.
According to Hulu’s official summary, the movie is about:
“To assess Jax Stewart in “Reasonable Doubt,” you’ll be looking at her dubious ethical standards and irrational legal interpretations. till you’re the one who’s in hot water. There will be no doubt in your mind: a clever and gutsy defence attorney in Los Angeles who defies the judicial system at every turn.”
Onyx Collective’s Reasonable Doubt joins two other Hulu productions. The first is Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), a documentary about the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969, which won an Academy Award for best documentary. Aftershock, a forthcoming documentary on the US maternal health issue, is the second. This film premieres on July 19th.
Washington previously told Deadline the following about the show:
“Simpson Street was formed with the premise that we are each the principal character in the tale of our life regardless of who we are, where we were born, what we believe, or who we love. It is right and proper for everyone of us to be and consider ourselves as the central character in the story. This first written drama series is an honour to work on with Onyx, a company devoted to featuring and supporting creators of colour and other marginalised perspectives. To be working with Larry Wilmore and Raamla Mohamed on a project managed by Emayatzy Corinealdi is an honour, and I look forward to engaging with both of them again. In a time like this, “we couldn’t have asked for better partners,” Simpson Street said in a statement.
Angela Grovey, Tim Jo, Aderinsola Olabode, Michael Ealy, McKinley Freeman, and TJ Mixson round out the cast of Reasonable Doubt. Raamla Mohamed conceived, wrote, and oversaw the production. Directed by Washington and executive produced by Shawn Holley, Jon Leshay, Simpson Street’s Pilar Savone and Wilmore Films’ Larry Wilmore.
On September 27, Hulu will debut Reasonable Doubt.
