Night City can now be explored virtually thanks to a new update for Cyberpunk 2077. Fans have been eagerly awaiting this release since the news emerged that modder Luke Ross was working on a Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod.
While it would be an understatement to say that the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 was untidy, the filthy sci-fi action RPG has undergone a redemption arc in the last year. Due to numerous updates and improvements, the game has been able to earn the trust of gamers after initially being plagued with lethal errors and poor performance, especially on consoles.
In addition to the long-awaited next-generation improvement, the latest 1.5 release added a slew of new material. Mods were created by PC gamers in between the game’s release and these big updates to improve and expand the original version of the game. While some of these mods provided minor corrections and visual updates, like the Cyberpunk 2077 car customization mod, others offered more substantial alterations and additions. However, Luke Ross’s VR extension is one of the most recent high-profile mods. However, as stated by Eurogamer, this mod is presently only accessible through Ross’s Patreon, which has advanced head tracking capabilities but no full motion controls. The VR experience appears to necessitate a beefed-up PC in order to work smoothly.
Despite using an RTX 3070 graphics card, Ian Higton of Eurogamer had framerate troubles while using the update. For a freelance programmer, it’s an outstanding and commendable effort, even if there are some issues with performance and stability. While there are many upgrades that make Cyberpunk 2077 more immersive and deep, none match witnessing Night City through a VR headset. So far, it appears Ross intends to achieve that goal with this big project; ideally, this foundation can continue to grow and become more stable.
VR compatibility is expected to become increasingly frequent in gaming as the technology becomes more widely available. It’s unlikely that CD Projekt Red will release a virtual reality version of Cyberpunk 2077 because the game is still being worked on from a traditional gaming perspective. Perhaps CDPR won’t have to make one if Luke Ross’s mod works as well as it appears.
