The Steam Deck device from Valve appears to be capable of running PlayStation 4 titles as well as the PS4. Steam Deck has already received positive reviews from a number of publications since its launch, with the majority of these praising the new portable console. In spite of its shortcomings, such as limited battery life and a lack of internal storage, the Steam Deck is projected to include these features. It is Valve’s massive game catalogue, though, that sets the Steam Deck apart from other portable gaming devices. Not every game on Steam’s marketplace is yet compatible with this new handheld gadget. While some games are already compatible with the Steam Deck due to their low system requirements, others may not operate at all or may require an update to be compatible with the device.
Users can now see which titles are compatible with the Steam Deck thanks to Valve’s Steam Deck Game Compatibility Check function. An evaluation of the Steam Deck by Digital Foundry (via Push Square) revealed that the new mobile gaming PC could run PS4 titles on par with or better than the actual system. At least 30 frames-per-second is required for games like Death Stranding, Horizon Zero Dawn, and God of War. However, Digital Foundry claims that these games can achieve even higher framerates when the cap is removed. It should be noted that 720p is a lesser resolution than the PS4’s normal 1080p output.
With a seven-inch screen, the Steam Deck’s reduced resolution is hardly noticeable. Steam Deck owners may one day have what amounts to a little PlayStation 4 in their hands thanks to PlayStation’s commitment to delivering more games to PC. As long as the Steam Deck isn’t incompatible with any of the most recent PS4 games, including Demon’s Souls and Horizon Forbidden West, Steam Deck owners can look forward to playing some of PlayStation’s earlier exclusives on the new portable. Having the ability to play PS4 games on the Steam Deck is a big deal. For those who have given up on handheld console gaming after Sony’s PS Vita commercial disaster, the Steam Deck is ready to fill the void. If all goes according to plan, PlayStation games will be playable on the new platform, even if it can only run older titles initially.
