Magic: The Gathering’s first official soundtrack, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, was just published in support of the forthcoming Kamigawa box set. Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Dungeons & Dragons and a slew of other successful franchises, produces a popular Trading Card Game called Magic: The Gathering. It was Magic: The Gathering Arena that replaced the much older Magic: The Gathering Online in 2018 and was one of the first games of its kind to be published on the market. Magic players have been familiar with Kamigawa for some time. The Champions of Kamigawa were the first game to fly in 2004.
When this set was published, it was just the eleventh block of sets to ever be issued in MTG’s long history. The civilization of Kamigawa appears to be based on a fantasy reimagining of mediaeval Japan, based on what players have seen thus far. In Japanese, the name “Kamigawa” means “Divine River” or “River of the Gods”. Magic: The Gathering’s first official soundtrack, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, has been published by Wizards of the Coast to accompany the forthcoming set.
Singer/songwriter Jonathan Young produced the soundtrack, which has the same name as the card set. The leader of the heavy metal band Trivium, Matthew Kiichi Heafy, worked with Young on the album. There are 15 songs on the soundtrack, and a rotating cast of musicians, including well-known video game composers like Caleb Hyles, Tomoko Hakaboshi, and Tre Watson, collaborated on them. “Neon Dynasty” by Kamigawa puts things in a completely new way. While the beloved ninjas and kami of the plane may still be found on the new set, Kamigawa has taken on a unique cyberpunk atmosphere.
The new set advances ahead hundreds of years. Players are no longer in the feudal era, but rather in a bizarre yet vibrant magical, technological hybrid world. One of the more intriguing tidbits of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty soundtrack’s three tracks may be found in the title. “One With Phyrexia” is the name of the band. The existence of Phyrexia’s influence on Kamigawa is a negative omen for the residents of the city. There’s a new method for Magic: The Gathering fans to get a taste of the new set’s mythology, culture, and vibe thanks to the soundtrack for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty.
If you’re excited for what Wizards of the Coast has in store for you in the future, and for what this album has to offer, you should be. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is now available on a number of different streaming services, including Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music, for fans to enjoy.
