For the next three years at least, Call of Duty will be available on PlayStation, according to a new claim. There has been much speculation about what will happen to Call of Duty now that Microsoft has acquired Activision, as it is a huge entertainment franchise that can’t be confined to a single platform.
In any case, it’s tough to believe that Microsoft would spend over $70 billion on the franchise without a clear strategy in mind. According to rumour, Call of Duty may no longer release a new game every year. This is a move that has undoubtedly done more harm than good in recent years. Despite the fact that Call of Duty has remained a top seller year after year, the shooter community’s love for the series has waned. Some fans are ready for a vacation after a string of forgettable, hurried contests and general exhaustion. Assuming nothing is set in stone, it looks like it could happen, but not yet. Call of Duty will continue to be released on PlayStation for the next three years, according to a Bloomberg report.
Treyarch’s Call of Duty 2023 and a Warzone sequel will arrive in 2019, along with the much-anticipated Modern Warfare 2 sequel. That Sony has contracts in place with Microsoft isn’t much of a surprise, given Microsoft has publicly declared its plans to retain Call of Duty on PlayStation. Nobody knows what will happen after the following three releases. The existence of a Warzone sequel suggests that even if the Call of Duty series is exclusively available on Xbox, at least one game will be actively promoted on PlayStation. Activision does not yet belong to Microsoft, but it should change by the summer of 2023.
Microsoft is likely to start planning the series’ future by then and decide if it wants to make it an Xbox exclusive brand or not. Call of Duty 2022 may be the final traditional entry in the series when it is released in October 2022, according to rumours. After Microsoft acquires Activision, it’s likely that the next Call of Duty game will be the final one. Similarly, Call of Duty 2023 could be the last core PlayStation game in the series, although that remains to be seen.
