The Texas Chain Saw Massacre multiplayer game from Gun Interactive will feature Friday the 13th veteran Kane Hodder, the studio said. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was one of the surprise announcements during last night’s Game Awards ceremony, even though virtually little information about the project is available at the time of writing.
Asymmetric multiplayer experience in the spirit of Gun Interactive’s and IllFonic’s Friday the 13th: The Game, the new Leatherface-starring project will take influence from the original 1974 film Texas Chain Saw Massacre, thus the title’s weird “chainsaw” spelling. Thus, as the marketing materials suggest, the experience will also draw inspiration from true events, specifically those surrounding Plainfield, Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein’s heinous acts. Surprisingly, reports of a Texas Chain Saw Massacre game began spreading a few months ago, courtesy of a Leatherface-themed domain name that directed players directly to Gun Interactive’s website. Now that the cat has been formally let out of the bag, additional information is beginning to accumulate.
Kane Hodder, well known for portraying Jason Voorhees in various Friday the 13th films, will star as Leatherface in Gun Interactive’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, as he previously teased. Fangoria verified this in an exclusive interview with Hodder, in which the actor revealed that he wished to “replicate Gunner [Hansen’s] performance.” Hansen played the serial killer in the 1974 picture; Hodder then played Leatherface’s stunt double in the 1990s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. Given that Hodder reprised his role as Jason in Friday the 13th: The Game, it’s unsurprising that he jumped on Gun Interactive’s latest reimagining of a famous horror series.
Kane Hodder is a great acquisition for Gun Interactive. As such, it will be fascinating to watch how his performance translates to the digital realm once players get their hands on the Texas Chain Saw Massacre-branded multiplayer title.
This project is one of the numerous asymmetric multiplayer games featuring horror icons. In some ways, Behaviour Interactive’s Dead by Daylight kicked off 2016 with a guest appearance by Michael Myers in an October 2016 update. (The following year, Leatherface was added to the roster of killers.) Though the game’s support was tragically brief, Friday the 13th: The Game increased the stakes in 2017. Predator: Hunting Grounds, launched by IllFonic in 2020 to lacklustre reviews, takes asymmetric multiplayer to new heights.
