As one of the first trailers revealed during The Game Awards 2021, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II was one of the most impressive next-gen games we’ve seen so far. The lengthy look at gameplay may very well be the most impressive next-gen game we’ve seen so far. Developer Ninja Theory revealed the long-awaited Hellblade sequel at The Game Awards in January of this year. Since then, only a little information concerning the project have been revealed in the media.
The first game was released on PC and PlayStation 4 in the summer of 2017, and it was later ported to Xbox One a few months later, in the spring of 2018. Hellblade, in particular, cast players in the role of Senua, a Celtic warrior from the 8th century who confronts her inner demons while starting on a quest to redeem the soul of her beloved from the evil goddess Hela. Senua’s struggle with mental illness was at the heart of the plot and the game’s central gameplay loop, with the protagonist frequently drowning in feelings of fear, uncertainty, and shame, all while an outstanding audio mix drew players further into the immersive action-adventure. It appears that the sequel would not shy away from discussing these issues as well.
Ninja Theory released a brand-new look at Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II at the Game Awards ceremony, which took place early in the evening. Towards the end of the reveal, Geoff Keighley pointed out that the film wasn’t just in-engine cinematic footage. Everything that was seen on the screen was pure gameplay. Furthermore, it appears to be just fantastic.
The release date is one piece of information that both Ninja Theory and Xbox are keeping close to their chests for the time being. There is no mention of due date in the above trailer at any point in time. Furthermore, the previously mentioned release window of 2022 has been kept under wraps. Fortunately, it appears as though the project is progressing smoothly at this point.
There have been a number of other titles that have kept Ninja Theory busy in recent years, including the Senua-starring franchise. Players on PC and Xbox may enjoy a MOBA experience complete with action-packed brawler gameplay when Bleeding Edge is published in early 2020 by the studio. While Bleeding Edge failed to shift the needle, it did provide Ninja Theory with an opportunity to spread its wings a little and, considering the subject matter of Hellblade, it is likely that the crew needed a breath of fresh air. With that in mind, who knows what the Hellblade sequel production team may have up their sleeves once Hellblade 2 is completed.
